DJI Mavic 2 Pro or DJI Mavic 2 Zoom? Which is Right for You?

DJI Mavic 2 Pro or DJI Mavic 2 Zoom? Which is Right for You?

DJI Mavic Pro 2 Zoom Ice Aerials Flight

Intro

This post directly compares and contrasts the highlights of the Mavic 2 Zoom and the Mavic 2 Pro drones and why one may be a better fit over the other based on personal preferences. Use this as a guide, but feel free to check out other resources as well to help guide which might be best for you!

DJI MAVIC PRO 2

The Mavic Pro 2’s biggest talking point is the new Hassleblad 1″ sensor camera which records 10-bit color. What does that even mean? Bit depth is the ability of the camera to detect subtle changes in colors. With 10-bit color there are 1,024 shades of each primary color present. This will give you, the creator, the ability to correct colors in post processing with a very high level of tonal control. When the color bit depth is paired with the 1″ sensor with 20 MP the Mavic Pro 2 can also achieve better low-light performance than the competitors and its predecessors.

DJI MAVIC 2 ZOOM

The Mavic 2 Zoom offers a slightly different aspect in the fact that it has a 24-48mm optical zoom lens. While this drone does not have a camera made by Hassleblad, has a considerably smaller sensor size, and 8-bit color it still packs a punch. The key differentiator besides the zoom capabilities of the camera is that it boasts a 48 MP SuperRes mode. This is extremely useful for photographers to gain different perspectives without losing quality. The key feature for videographers with the zoom lens is the ability to do Dolly Zooms. Dolly Zoom is a famous effect first used by Alfred Hitchcock. It allows the user to zoom while moving forward/backwards to achieve a unique effect and add a new dynamic to projects.

Which should you buy?

While it depends on the intent of use, I would generally say that the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom allows more bang for your buck, coming in at 200 dollars cheaper than the DJI Mavic Pro 2. The ability to shoot in 48 MP SuperRes mode with the zoom lens and use Dolly Zooms offers major differentiators over the market for giving your projects a unique perspective never before achieved by drones. In a world where subtle details matter I think these two features will do more to help grab the audiences attention than simply having better colors and lowlight performance. Let me know what your thoughts are below and which you will be getting!
